UK airport cyberattack stole 8.7m customers' data, MAG says
Manchester Airports Group said a cyberattack stole private data on 8.7 million customers at three British airports, but did not disrupt flights or airport operations.
MAG operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports. It said the compromised information included email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and postcodes.
The company said the cyberattack took place over the weekend and that it became aware of it on Tuesday. It announced the incident on Thursday.
MAG said the breach affected data linked to car park, lounge and Fast Track bookings, as well as in-airport WiFi sign-up. It attributed the attack to “an unauthorised third party” without giving further details.
The company said the incident had “not resulted in any operational disruption” and that airport operations remained unaffected. It said passenger safety, aviation security, bank details and payment details were not compromised.
MAG said it had contained the risk and was working with specialist advisers to protect customers and systems.
Uncertainty notes
MAG did not identify the unauthorised third party behind the cyberattack.
The full consequences for affected customers remain unclear.
