Kremlin rejects reports on CIA chief's Moscow visit
The Kremlin dismissed US media reports about CIA Director John Ratcliffe's Moscow visit as “scare stories”, after outlets said the trip was meant to warn Russia against any attack on NATO.
The Wall Street Journal, citing sources briefed on the visit, reported that the trip was prompted by US intelligence assessments that Russia could seek to test the defence alliance with a limited assault on a NATO member in the next few years.
CBS News, citing multiple people familiar with the matter, reported that Ratcliffe also discussed the war with Iran during Tuesday's visit and warned of additional sanctions if the Strait of Hormuz does not reopen to shipping traffic.
President Donald Trump said Wednesday in an interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck that Ratcliffe's visit was “very sort of semi-routine” and linked it to efforts to end the war in Ukraine. He rejected suggestions that Ratcliffe was in Moscow to discuss Russia testing NATO's resolve or the US campaign to increase economic pressure on Iran.
The Kremlin had previously said Ratcliffe had “contacts” with Russia's special services during the visit but did not meet President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin was briefed on the talks, but declined to say whether the Ukraine war was discussed.
Ratcliffe is one of the highest-ranking US officials to visit Russia since its war with Ukraine began in 2022. The reported visit came as US-brokered peace talks have stalled and Moscow's offensive in Ukraine has escalated.
