Sweden school attack suspect remanded in custody
An 18-year-old man arrested after a fatal sword attack at Brinell school in Fagersta, Sweden, has been remanded in custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, Swedish prosecutors said.
The suspect entered the high school on Friday afternoon, August 21, days after students returned from summer break. Police said on Saturday that officers shot at the suspect before detaining him, but that he was not hit.
Police identified the person killed as a 17-year-old girl. Three boys were also wounded, two of them seriously.
Sweden's prosecution authority said Vastmanland District Court remanded the suspect in custody on Sunday on probable cause suspected of the offences. It said the investigation was in an early and intensive phase.
The school remained cordoned off on Sunday, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported. Local police chief Tommy Alriksson said investigators were examining several possible motives and trying to keep an open mind.
SVT reported that the suspect had a previous assault conviction and wore a helmet and carried a sword. Media outlets reported that investigators were examining a TikTok account said to belong to the suspect. AFP said it viewed the account before it was taken down and that it contained several videos referencing school attacks, with a final update showing a photo of a sword.
Alriksson said police had conducted about 80 interviews by Saturday and planned to question nearly all of the school's staff and students, almost 450 people. Two addresses linked to the attacker in Fagersta were also searched.
