Spider-Man breaks domestic box office debut record
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” broke the all-time domestic box office debut record after updated figures for the United States and Canada showed a $360 million opening weekend, Sony Pictures said Monday.
The total was up from Sunday's $355 million estimate and put the Marvel superhero film ahead of Disney's “Avengers: Endgame”, which opened with $357 million in 2019. The figures were not adjusted for inflation.
The updated domestic total brought “Brand New Day” to a $932 million global debut, still second to the $1.2 billion opening for “Endgame”.
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in the film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh and Sadie Sink also appear.
The film opened despite competition from Christopher Nolan's “The Odyssey” for IMAX screens. “Brand New Day” is scheduled to begin its IMAX run the following weekend.

The updated figures put the film's global debut at $932 million, still behind Avengers: Endgame's $1.2 billion global debut.
