Spanish soldier dies as wildfire truck falls into ravine
A Spanish soldier died on Sunday while helping fight a major wildfire in Spain's northeastern Aragon region when his truck tumbled into a ravine, authorities said.
The army's Military Emergencies Unit confirmed the soldier's death. Noelia Herrero, the central government's top representative in Zaragoza, said the accident happened in the Atares ravine near Mount Oroel, an area of rugged terrain and narrow roads.
The regional government said three other occupants of the fire engine were taken to hospital with injuries of varying severity.
The Aragon wildfire has burned an estimated 17,500 hectares, according to the regional government's latest figure. More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from nearby villages, while several roads and part of the regional rail network remain shut.
The regional government said Sunday night's work would focus on consolidating containment in the most dangerous sectors, after partial containment during the day. It had announced what it called the largest firefighting deployment in Aragon's history, with 100 French reinforcements bringing the response to 1,000 people.
The flames have come close to the two San Juan de la Pena monasteries, a symbol of the region. The oldest monastery has origins in the 10th century, and the remains of the first kings of the medieval kingdom of Aragon were rescued on Thursday.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed solidarity with the soldier's family and colleagues. Aragon leader Jorge Azcon said King Felipe VI had called him to express support for evacuees and gratitude to firefighters.
The Civil Guard has arrested a person suspected of starting the Aragon fire.
Spain has faced several spells of extreme summer heat, contributing to wildfire conditions. In Andalusia, authorities allowed more than 400 evacuees to return home after a separate wildfire that has burned for 10 days and affected more than 25,000 hectares was declared under control on Sunday.
