Slovakia sets 42.2C heat record, agency says
Slovakia recorded 42.2C in the southern village of Dolne Plachtince on Thursday, setting an all-time national temperature high for the second day in a row, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute said.
The reading broke the 41.4C record set on Wednesday in Kamenica nad Hronom in southwestern Slovakia, the agency said. Wednesday’s reading had beaten the previous national high of 41.3C, set in Kamenica nad Hronom on June 30, after Slovakia’s all-time record had already been broken twice in June.
The records came during an exceptional spell of hot weather and low rainfall across central Europe. Neighbouring Austria has also broken temperature records twice this week.
Experts cited by AFP say climate change has intensified drought across Europe this summer, with extreme heat driving the dry conditions. In Bratislava, resident Maros Danko told AFP he was spending more time at home and avoiding daytime sports because of the heat.
