Two killed at school near Berlin, media say

Two people were killed in a violent incident at a secondary school in Gosen-Neu Zittau near Berlin on Thursday, local media reported, identifying them as an 18-year-old female student and a 30-year-old man.

Regional public broadcaster RBB and Maerkische Allgemeine Zeitung said the alarm had been raised at the school in the town just outside the German capital. Maerkische Allgemeine Zeitung reported that the arrested man was 19 and the ex-boyfriend of the female victim, citing sources close to the investigation.

The newspaper said the 30-year-old man was believed to have died while trying to intervene. It did not specify whether a knife or another weapon was used.

Police had earlier confirmed only that two people had suffered severe injuries, that officers were at the scene and that a suspect had been arrested. Police said a male suspect had been provisionally arrested after an act of violence and was linked to the incident according to current information.

Images from streets near the school showed multiple emergency service vehicles. Two rescue helicopters were also deployed.

The private Docemus school said regular classes would be cancelled Friday, but that the school would remain open for students who wanted to come to campus and receive support.
