Russia-Ukraine strikes kill 13 as Macron pledges missiles

France promised to send new interceptor missiles to Ukraine as strikes in Ukraine, Russia and Russia-annexed Crimea killed at least 13 people overnight and through Saturday.

The deaths included seven people in Ukraine, four in Russia and two in Crimea. The attacks came as Ukraine reported a shortage of advanced missile interceptors, especially US-made Patriot systems, after repeated Russian ballistic missile attacks.

French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X that it was “crucial” to give Ukraine the means to defend its skies. Ukraine's allies in the Coalition of the Willing, led by France and Britain, are due to meet on Monday to discuss how to increase pressure on Moscow.

In southern Russia, Krasnodar governor Veniamin Kondratyev said a Ukrainian drone strike on a house in the Yeysk district killed two children and wounded their parents.

Russia fired a ballistic missile towards Kyiv while German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul was visiting for talks with Ukrainian officials. Two people were killed and several wounded in the Boryspil district on the eastern outskirts of the capital, Ukrainian officials said.

Russia's defence ministry said it had struck trucks outfitted to carry long-range drones near Kyiv and targets linked to the Ukrainian army in the Odesa region. Odesa governor Oleg Kiper said three people were wounded, including a 16-year-old girl, in a prolonged combined strike that hit a house and grain silos.

Ukrainian officials said at least four people were killed in strikes on the frontline Zaporizhzhia region.

Rescuers in Kryvyi Rig were still searching the rubble of a shopping centre hit by Russian drones on Friday. Regional officials said 16 people had been confirmed killed, more than 100 wounded and three remained missing.

The United Nations has reported that Ukraine's civilian death toll so far this year has risen to its highest level since the first months of Russia's invasion.
