Prague mother burned during C-section, hospital says

A woman suffered burns while giving birth by caesarean section at a Prague hospital, the hospital said Monday. The baby was not injured.

Eva Stolejda Libigerova, a spokeswoman for Bulovka hospital on the northern outskirts of the Czech capital, said the caesarean section was performed because of acute obstetrical complications. She said the hospital was investigating the August 25 incident.

“The mother is in a stable condition which does not require intensive care and... remains at a standard ward with her child,” Libigerova said.

Denik N reported that the 24-year-old mother suffered burns to her genitals, thighs, sides and lower belly. It said she caught fire when hospital staff administered a disinfectant and then used a surgical instrument to stop bleeding.

Denik N also reported that the woman was taken to another Prague hospital with a renowned burn ward for treatment before returning to Bulovka.

Bulovka hospital apologised in 2024 after performing an abortion on the wrong pregnant woman after mixing up two Asian women. Czech media said the hospital paid compensation and police shelved the case.
