Niger junta says it is regaining control from mutineers
Niger's military said on Saturday that it was gradually regaining control after mutineers held soldiers hostage at a military base next to Niamey's international airport and fired shots.
A statement read on public television and signed by Defence Minister General Salifou Mody called on the public to remain calm and go about their business.
Heavy gunfire was heard in several areas of Niamey through the night, particularly around the presidential palace and the international airport, where there is also a key airbase.
Uncertainty notes
The number of hostages, casualties, if any, and the current extent of the mutiny were not given.
