New Zealand teen missing after Bangladesh boat capsizes

A 16-year-old New Zealand teenager was missing after a boat carrying four people capsized near Cox's Bazar on Bangladesh's southeastern coast, officials said.

Police identified the teenager as Albert but withheld his surname. The boat overturned in rough waters on Tuesday morning near an estuary off Cox's Bazar.

The three other New Zealanders on board were rescued by nearby fishermen. An official who was not authorised to speak to the media told AFP that the Coast Guard was searching for the teenager, a helicopter was conducting an aerial search and fishermen had been alerted.

The official said rough conditions in the Bay of Bengal had hampered rescue efforts. Mohammad Ali, the officer-in-charge of Cox's Bazar police station, said the four had been on a trip when the boat met with an accident.

Local media reported that the four were from the same family, but officials could not immediately confirm that.
