Nepal flood damages roads and power in Rasuwa

A flood swept through northern Nepal's Rasuwa district bordering China on Wednesday, damaging roads and electricity infrastructure and prompting authorities to deploy rescuers and warn riverside residents to move.

Nepal Police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle told AFP that authorities did not yet know the full extent of the damage. He said the flood was large and could have damaged many settlements.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah convened an emergency meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The Nepal Army said it had deployed helicopters and disaster response personnel and was collecting details of the damage.

The Nepal Electricity Authority said about 430 megawatts of production capacity, including hydropower and solar facilities, had been damaged, disrupting electricity supply. Authorities also said several highways were closed.

Monsoon rains from June to September regularly trigger floods and landslides across South Asia.
