Mexico seizes 210 firearms smuggled from Texas

Mexican authorities seized 210 firearms that were smuggled into the country from Texas by criminal groups, Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch said on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Harfuch wrote on X that the weapons included 195 rifles, 15 handguns and 93 magazines. He said they were found hidden in two trucks travelling on a highway in Nuevo Leon, a northern state on the US border.

Three people were arrested in what Harfuch described as an operation to dismantle routes used to illegally smuggle weapons into Mexico.

He said the seizure brought the number of firearms seized since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024 to more than 30,000.

Mexico has repeatedly urged the United States to clamp down on illegal weapons flowing across the border, saying the arms are fuelling the country’s drug war. Mexico has also rebuffed criticism from US President Donald Trump of Sheinbaum’s record against powerful drug cartels.
