Mexico journalist killings spur call for Sheinbaum action

Dozens of Mexican media outlets and Reporters Without Borders called on President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday to act against attacks on media workers in Mexico, where at least seven journalists have been killed this year.

More than 40 local media outlets endorsed a statement by Reporters Without Borders urging a national emergency response involving federal and local authorities to protect reporters.

Reporters Without Borders said 17 journalists have been killed since Sheinbaum took office in October 2024. The group said Mexico should not become accustomed to counting murdered journalists.

Article 19 has recorded more than 180 crimes against media workers in Mexico since 2000.

Sheinbaum's administration recently drew criticism after releasing the names of journalists and outlets that had been critical of the government. Those listed said they received online abuse afterward. Sheinbaum played down the incident but said no names would be circulated again.
