Mexicali alert: Mexico says no imminent risk known

The US consulate in Tijuana issued a security alert for Mexicali on Tuesday and suspended its activities in the Baja California border city over what it called a “potential threat,” while Mexico's security ministry said authorities knew of no “specific or imminent risk to the population.”

The consulate urged Americans in Mexicali to exercise caution. It also told US citizens to avoid government buildings, take cover if an incident occurred and monitor local media for updates.

The alert came days after Mexican security forces seized 120 kilograms of fentanyl from a local gang linked to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel. Mexican Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch said on X that the operation followed information sharing with the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar said security in the area had been stepped up, including prevention, patrol and surveillance measures across Mexicali.

Mexicali and nearby Tijuana are entry points for drugs moving from Mexico into the United States. Baja California is among Mexico's five most violent states because of the presence of drug cartels, according to official figures.
