Mali frees French agent Yann Vezilier, France says
Mali has freed French intelligence agent Yann Vezilier after a presidential pardon, France’s foreign ministry said Friday, welcoming the release after years of tension between the two countries.
The ministry said Vezilier, who had been stationed at the French embassy in Bamako, was returning to France to be reunited with his loved ones.
Mali’s junta chief Assimi Goita pardoned Vezilier on Thursday. He had been serving a 20-year jail term after being sentenced in June.
Vezilier was arrested a year ago in Mali on charges of being a spy and undermining state security. France says the charges against him are baseless.
Mali said the clemency “does not call into question the facts established by an adversarial judgment rendered during trial.”
The case had added to strained relations between France and Mali, where a junta has ruled since back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021.

The official was identified as Yann V.
He was sentenced in June after being accused of spying and ordered to serve 20 years in jail.
He was detained on August 13 last year with several Malian officers accused of plotting a coup.
France says the charges against the official were without merit.
After the arrest, France suspended counter-terrorism cooperation with Mali and ordered two Malian diplomats to leave French territory.
The Malian officers arrested with him have not yet stood trial.

The person was an official from the French embassy.
The official had been accused of being a spy and ordered to serve 20 years in jail.
Mali's government said the pardon would be accompanied by the official's immediate removal from national territory.
The government said the clemency did not call into question the court judgment.
