Lisbon Gloria funicular to be replaced after crash

Lisbon's Gloria funicular will be replaced after an accident last year killed 16 people, Portuguese authorities announced Monday.

Eleven foreigners were among those who died when a cable on the 140-year-old funicular broke and a carriage hit a building on September 3 last year.

The Gloria and Lisbon's two other funiculars have been shut since the accident. Investigators highlighted a series of failures and said an underground cable linking the two carriages had broken.

Carris, the transport company owned by Lisbon city authorities, said it would launch a tender for a new system in early 2027, with the aim of having a new funicular running by 2029.

Carris president Rui Pedro Gaspar Lopo said the line would be new and "not a reconstruction" of the old tourist attraction. Goncalo Reis, deputy head of the city council, said the project should be modern while preserving the site's historic identity.
