Kyiv-area strikes kill 10 as Zelensky seeks Patriots

Russian attacks on Kyiv and the suburb of Brovary killed 10 people early Saturday, Ukrainian authorities said, as President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed for more Patriot air defence systems.

Authorities said more than 30 people were wounded and five districts of Kyiv were hit. They reported seven deaths and 14 wounded in the eastern Darnytsky district, two deaths and eight wounded in the western Solomiansky district, and one death in Brovary.

The Lithuanian embassy was among the buildings damaged, Lithuania's foreign minister said. Ukrainian authorities also reported damage to residential buildings and vehicles.

Russia's defence ministry said it had struck “military-industrial complex enterprises and logistics centres”.

Zelensky said Ukraine needed more Patriot systems, calling them Kyiv's only effective defence against Russian ballistic missile attacks. “It is this shortage of ballistic missile interceptors that only encourages Russia to launch such attacks that take human lives,” he said on X.

The strikes came as Ukraine also escalated attacks on Russian targets. Rosatom, Russia's state-owned nuclear power operator, said Ukrainian drones sank the Russian-owned container ship Yanina in the Black Sea near Novorossiysk, forcing its 17-member crew to abandon the vessel. Rosatom said all crew members were rescued and were in good condition.

Rosatom said the ship was carrying civilian goods including frozen food and construction materials. There was no immediate indication that it was carrying nuclear material or carrying out work linked to Rosatom's nuclear arm.

Zelensky confirmed Ukraine was behind the strike, describing the vessel as a “sanctioned Russian container ship”. Kyiv has accused Russia of using the Black Sea to transport sanctioned goods, including oil.

Ukraine has been pressing allies for more air defences. Zelensky met US President Donald Trump on Tuesday and later said Trump had agreed to license production of Patriot missiles to Kyiv, but Trump said Friday that Washington would have to be “very careful” about the decision.
