Kyiv Russian strikes kill 16, Ukraine says
Russian bombardments killed at least 16 people in Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight into Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said, as rescuers searched rubble and neighbouring countries raised air defences.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said 15 people were killed in the capital. Authorities said one more person was killed in the wider Kyiv region. In Kyiv, rescuers searched destroyed buildings, including a damaged children's hospital. AFP reported that two bodies were pulled from an apartment block as families watched.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strike a “massive attack” and said Russia had combined ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones during an assault that lasted nine hours in the capital.
Ukraine's air force said Russia launched at least 44 missiles, of which 39 were shot down. Moscow said it hit “military-industrial facilities, a transportation and logistics centre, and warehouses” in Kyiv and its region. Authorities said warehouses in Boryspil, outside Kyiv, were also damaged.
The first explosions over Kyiv came less than three minutes after the official air raid warning late Wednesday night. AFP said ballistic missiles fired at Kyiv can reach the capital within minutes and can be effectively intercepted only by US-designed Patriot air defence systems.
Zelensky said Ukraine needed missiles for Patriot systems and called for political decisions by partners, “first and foremost in the United States”. Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to allies for more air defence support as Russia steps up strikes. AFP analysis of Ukrainian air force data said Russia fired a record number of missiles in July.
The attacks also prompted security responses in neighbouring countries. Poland's military command said it mobilised aircraft and activated air defences to protect Polish airspace, especially near Ukraine.
Romania's defence ministry said radar systems detected aerial targets near the Ukrainian border, prompting two Spanish fighter jets on NATO missions and a Romanian air force helicopter to scramble. The ministry said a drone entered Romanian airspace near Galati before crashing in an unpopulated area around Tulcea, close to Ukraine.
Moldova said a Shahed-style drone, a type used by Russia, crashed on its territory and caused a fire near the border with Ukraine. Russia separately said it had downed 726 Ukrainian drones overnight.
