Kyiv Russian barrage kills 12, Ukraine says
A Russian drone and ballistic missile barrage killed at least 12 people and wounded 21 in Kyiv and its surrounding region overnight, Ukrainian officials said Tuesday.
Authorities said eight of the victims were killed in Kyiv and that most were railway workers who died after a ballistic missile hit a rail depot. Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, chief executive of Ukrainian Railways, said six of the company's employees were killed.
Pertsovskyi said the attack caused extensive destruction, including the complete devastation of a workshop, and that fires continued to burn at some sites.
Ukrainian prosecutors said another four people were killed in the Kyiv region, where a residential building was damaged in the suburb of Boryspil. President Volodymyr Zelensky said 50 people were evacuated from the building and that an Indian citizen was among the dead.
Zelensky denounced “Russian terror” and called on Ukraine's allies to increase air defence deliveries in the autumn.
Russia's defence ministry said its forces carried out a “massive strike” using long-range weapons and attack drones. It said the attack targeted military-industrial and fuel and energy facilities in Kyiv and the surrounding region. The ministry also said it struck infrastructure in the southern Odesa region and the ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk.
Ukraine's border service said Moscow hit the Orlivka ferry checkpoint on the frontier with NATO member Romania with Shahed-type attack drones. Ukrainian officials also said a fire and rescue vehicle was struck in Zaporizhzhia, wounding four people, and that the Odesa region was attacked.
AFP journalists in Kyiv heard around a dozen loud explosions and saw flashes in the sky early Tuesday. Ukraine's air force warned that the threat of ballistic weapons and other attacks against Kyiv and the region remained in effect and urged residents to stay in shelters.
The strikes came as Ukrainian children were set to return to school after the summer holidays. The Kyiv regional military administration warned that large events should not be held in high-risk areas.
Kyiv and surrounding areas have faced sustained Russian attacks in recent weeks. A weekend attack on an ammunition depot killed 38 people in the capital's suburbs. Ukraine faces a shortage of interceptor missiles, particularly US-made Patriot systems used against ballistic threats.

Ukrainian Railways chief Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said a ballistic strike on a Kyiv railway depot and other facilities killed seven people.
Pertsovskyi said six of those killed were Ukrainian Railways employees.
Pertsovskyi said one colleague was in hospital with injuries and that there was extensive destruction.
The strike set off fires, according to AFP's account of Pertsovskyi's statement.
