Iran says it hit US bases as US probes wedding strike
Iran said Thursday it struck US military bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, while Kuwait said it intercepted missiles and drones from Iran and Washington said it was investigating Tehran's allegation that a US strike hit a wedding in southern Iran.
Iran's army said it hit US assets at Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base in Kuwait with missiles and drones. Kuwait called the strikes a grave breach of international law. Iran's army also said it struck Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE, but the UAE reported no such attack.
The strikes followed an Iranian Red Crescent statement that a missile attack on a wedding in the Iranian coastal town of Kuhestak on Tuesday night killed four people, including a child, and wounded more than 50.
US Vice President JD Vance said Washington was investigating the alleged wedding strike but said he was “extremely sceptical” of Iranian state media reports. US Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins said “the US military never targets civilians, unlike the IRGC”, referring to Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards chief Ahmad Vahidi vowed to avenge the victims. Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei warned the United States that Iran had adopted a “new strategy”.
The latest clashes began with US raids on Sunday and have deepened the impasse in the six-month war. Iran maintains its hold on the strategic Strait of Hormuz and Washington is pressing a counter-blockade of Iranian ports.
Extensive US bombardment of sites across Iran killed at least 19 Iranians between Tuesday and Wednesday. Iran's Tasnim news agency said six Iranian army naval personnel were killed by US attacks this week, but it was not immediately clear whether the six were among the 19.
Tehran said it targeted US bases and forces this week in the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan and Iraq's Kurdistan region. Vance said he “wouldn't call it a war” and said “right now, there is no active shooting”, while acknowledging there had been flare-ups.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that Iran's Islamic republic was “teetering” and “weaker than ever”. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel was prepared to respond “with great force” if attacked by Iran during the Jewish high holiday season beginning in mid-September.
Washington has also threatened expanded sanctions on Iran's trade partners. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said a plan for expanded sanctions targeting Iran's economic partners would deliver “absolutely maximum pressure”.
The war began on February 28 with US-Israeli attacks on Iran that killed supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A fragile ceasefire collapsed in July after attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of world oil supplies previously flowed.
