India-China border talks: cooperation resuming, Wang says

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said cooperation with India was “gradually resuming” as he met Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Beijing on Tuesday for talks on the countries' disputed Himalayan border.

“The two countries are gradually resuming institutional exchanges and cooperation, and are jointly committed to maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas,” Wang told Doval, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.

The ministry said the officials also discussed improving border control, advancing cross-border cooperation, and “international and regional issues of mutual concern.” Officials agreed to hold another round of border talks in India next year.

Doval arrived in Beijing on Monday for a two-day visit. The meeting came ahead of a September 12-13 BRICS summit in New Delhi, which India hopes Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend.

India and China share a 3,500-kilometre border and have accused each other in the past of trying to seize territory. Ties have gradually improved since a deadly border clash in 2020, including through the resumption of direct flights and border trade.

The border talks have been held annually since formal high-level discussions resumed in 2024 after a five-year hiatus.
