Houthi attacks kill at least 10 in Marib, sources say
Houthi attacks in Yemen's Marib province killed at least 10 people on Friday, Yemen's health minister and a Yemeni military source said, while the UN envoy warned that the country faces a rising risk of renewed large-scale conflict.
A Yemeni military source told AFP that the latest attacks killed eight members of government forces and wounded 12 others. The source said the Houthis launched more than 10 missiles and seven one-way attack drones targeting military camps in the province.
Health Minister Qasim Buhaibeh said Houthi shelling of residential neighbourhoods and displacement camps in Marib city killed at least two civilians and wounded 14 others. He described the toll as initial.
The Houthis said they attacked the Sahn al-Jinn military camp in Marib. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said forces, arsenals, vehicles and military equipment at the camp were targeted with missiles and drones.
UN special envoy Hans Grundberg said Yemen “today faces a greater risk of renewed large-scale conflict than at any point since the UN-brokered truce of April 2022.” Amid the confrontation between the United States and Iran, he called on both sides to show restraint and return to good-faith negotiations.
The Friday attacks followed Houthi missile and drone strikes on Thursday that killed at least 58 government troops, mainly in Marib, an army source told AFP. The Houthis said those attacks were a response to a Saudi-backed build-up of government forces.
A source close to the Saudi military told AFP that the Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's government would not stand “idly by” against the Houthi attacks, while saying the coalition did not seek escalation. The source described Marib as a “red line” and said Saudi authorities would not accept a Houthi takeover of the province.
Marib province is split between the Houthis and Yemen's Saudi-backed government, which controls Marib city and the area's oil fields and facilities. Fighting had largely slowed after the 2022 truce, but AFP reported that the truce began unravelling last month.
