Gaza plan: 8 Muslim countries condemn Israeli rejection
Foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates condemned Israel's rejection of a roadmap for implementing US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan on Sunday.
In a joint statement, the ministers condemned what they called Israel's declared rejection of the roadmap and of Palestinian statehood. They accused Israel of undermining the plan's implementation and efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.
The condemnation came as a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya met Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad to discuss advancing the plan, Egypt's state news agency MENA reported. MENA said the delegation reaffirmed its commitment to completing Trump's plan.
Hamas had said in late July that it was ready to hand over its weapons to a new technical committee that would govern Gaza under a 15-point plan announced by Trump's Board of Peace. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the plan, saying Israeli forces would not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed.
A Hamas official told AFP that talks in El-Alamein would cover negotiations and efforts to press Israel to abide by the agreement and begin implementing the roadmap. Another Hamas source told AFP that contacts were underway with Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators to press Israel to abide by the deal.
