Greenland to host Ursula von der Leyen after Trump demands

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Greenland for two days from September 6 to strengthen EU support for the autonomous Danish territory, Brussels said on August 27.

Von der Leyen is due to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen. EU spokeswoman Paula Pinho said von der Leyen will sign an EU-Greenland joint declaration during the visit.

Pinho said the trip shows Europe's commitment to the Arctic, its security and cooperation.

The visit follows US President Donald Trump's repeated calls for Washington to take control of or annex Greenland. Von der Leyen earlier this year pledged to increase EU investments in Greenland, and Brussels has proposed doubling the bloc's direct support to more than $600 million under its next budget for 2028-2034.
