Gaza officials say Israeli strikes kill five in Gaza City

Gaza health officials and rescuers said Israeli strikes killed five people around Gaza City on Monday, while Israel's military said it targeted Hamas military operatives and identified one of the dead as a weapons supplier to the group.

Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City said it received two bodies after an Israeli airstrike hit the entrance of a residential building near the municipal park in Gaza City.

The hospital later said it received three more bodies and several wounded after an Israeli drone strike hit a civilian car in Tel al-Hawa, southwest of the city. Gaza's civil defence agency, which operates as a rescue service under Hamas authority, confirmed the toll in the two strikes.

The Israeli military told AFP that both strikes targeted operatives from Hamas's Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades. It later identified one of the dead as Omar Mohammed Roshdy Saraj and said he supplied weapons to Hamas.

“The terrorists were struck in order to remove the threat they posed,” the military said.

The deaths came despite a US-backed ceasefire in Gaza that took effect in October 2025. Israel says it continues to target Palestinians it identifies as militants and must eliminate threats from Hamas, whose October 7, 2023 attack against Israel sparked the war in Gaza.

Gaza's health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority and whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations, says Israeli operations have killed at least 1,318 people since the ceasefire took effect. The Israeli army has reported five deaths in its ranks and one civilian contractor killed over the same period.
