Finland summons Russian envoy over suspected airspace breach
Finland has summoned Russia's ambassador and requested an explanation over a suspected airspace violation by a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft, the foreign ministry said Friday.
Finland's Ministry of Defence first reported the suspected violation on Thursday evening. The Finnish Border Guard said Friday that the aircraft was suspected of entering Finnish airspace for around three minutes on Thursday afternoon in the western Gulf of Finland, south of the island of Uto.
The Border Guard said the plane reached about 4.7 nautical miles, or nine kilometres, into Finnish airspace and that it had opened a preliminary investigation.
“Every suspected violation of air space is taken seriously,” Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen said Thursday evening.
Finland shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia and has reported a series of similar incidents in recent years. Finnish authorities suspected two Russian military aircraft of entering Finnish airspace in separate incidents in May and June, after which Finland summoned Russia's charge d'affaires.
Finland joined NATO in April 2023 after abandoning decades of military non-alignment.
