Daniel Kinahan charged in Ireland after UAE extradition

Daniel Kinahan was charged in Dublin on Sunday with directing a criminal organisation and was remanded in custody after being extradited from Dubai to Ireland.

The 49-year-old Irishman appeared at the Special Criminal Court, where he was told the charge alleges he directed the activities of a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017. He was remanded in custody until a hearing on October 5.

Kinahan is alleged to be one of the leaders of a transnational group known as the Kinahan Organised Crime Group, or the Kinahan cartel. US and European authorities have alleged that he ran a group from Dubai linked to drug smuggling and money laundering.

A plane carrying Kinahan landed at Casement Aerodrome, a military air base west of Dublin, at about 6:30 p.m. local time, an AFP video journalist saw. Irish police later said they had arrested and charged a man in his late 40s over serious organised crime offences, without naming Kinahan in that statement.

Irish police chief Justin Kelly said the arrest showed Ireland's determination, with international policing partners including Dubai Police, to target transnational organised crime groups.

In a joint statement, UAE and Irish justice ministers called Kinahan “one of the most high-profile individuals sought for prosecution in connection with transnational organised crime”. Irish Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan said the extradition sent a message that suspected perpetrators of serious and organised crime would find no safe haven from justice.

The Special Criminal Court handles terrorism and organised crime cases and sits with three judges and no jury. Kinahan had lost a final appeal against extradition from the UAE, where he had lived openly for about a decade before his arrest.

Kinahan is the second person allegedly linked to the same criminal organisation to be extradited from Dubai. Sean McGovern, described by a judge as a senior lieutenant in the cartel, was extradited after his arrest there in 2024 and was sentenced in Ireland in June to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to directing organised crime and attempted murder.
