Cuban migrants: 15 rescued by Mexico navy after days at sea

Mexico's navy said Thursday it had rescued 15 Cuban migrants, including four minors, after the group went missing at sea last week.

Cuban and US media reported that the migrants had set sail from Pinar del Rio in western Cuba on August 11. Their whereabouts had been unknown since then, and concerns had grown after reports that the boat was running short of supplies.

A Cuban man living in Mexico, whose two children were travelling on the boat with their mother, told Univision on Monday that the boat was low on fuel.

Cubans seeking to leave the island have for decades risked dangerous sea journeys toward the United States or Mexico. Some crossings have ended with migrants drowning or being returned by coast guard authorities.
