Caracas airport to reopen September 1 after quakes
Maiquetia International Airport, which serves Caracas, will reopen to commercial flights on September 1, the airport announced on August 25, two months after twin earthquakes hit Venezuela.
The airport, in Guaira state, said domestic and international flights would resume from provisional terminals. Guaira was described as the worst-hit state in the June 24 disaster.
The twin earthquakes left more than 6,500 people dead and thousands missing. The airport's infrastructure was significantly damaged, including the main runway, and its operations were limited to humanitarian flights for several weeks. Air traffic was rerouted to smaller regional airports.
Earlier in August, the airport said it had set up two provisional departure terminals and two arrival terminals in large tents outside the damaged buildings.
