Canada economy grows 3.3% in second quarter

Canada's economy grew 3.3 percent in the second quarter, helped by stronger exports, data from the Canadian statistical agency showed Friday.

The agency said exports rose 3.6 percent in the quarter, the biggest increase since the first quarter of 2023. Exports of motor vehicles and light trucks rose 27 percent, making the largest contribution.

The agency also revised first-quarter GDP to 0.3 percent growth, instead of a previously reported 0.1 percent contraction. With that revision, Canada did not record a technical recession after a 1 percent decline in the final quarter of last year.

The figures were released as Canada faces a trade dispute with the United States. Talks collapsed last week, and the two countries imposed tit-for-tat tariffs on each other.

Nearly 60 percent of Canadian imports come from the United States, while about 70 percent of Canada's exports go there.
