Austria and Slovakia set all-time heat records
Austria and Slovakia set national temperature records on Wednesday as a heatwave affected central Europe, weather agencies in both countries said.
GeoSphere Austria said 41.2C was recorded at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in eastern Austria, breaking the 41C record set on Tuesday in Stammersdorf, Vienna. Tuesday’s reading had surpassed Austria’s earlier all-time record of 40.5C, recorded on August 8, 2013, also at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute said 41.4C was measured in Kamenica nad Hronom in southwestern Slovakia, beating the previous national high of 41.3C set in the same village in June.
The records came during an exceptional spell of hot weather and low rainfall across central Europe. GeoSphere Austria said Austria had its fourth-warmest July on record and that precipitation deficits reached 90 percent at some measuring stations. The Slovak record had already been broken twice in June.

Austria recorded 41.2C at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg on Wednesday.
GeoSphere Austria said the reading broke the 41C all-time record set in Vienna on Tuesday.
Austria set an all-time temperature record for the second day in a row.

GeoSphere Austria said 41C was measured in Stammersdorf, Vienna, exceeding the 40.8C recorded earlier in the day.
Slovakia's capital Bratislava also recorded 40.8C on Tuesday, according to the Slovak weather service.
Austria's agriculture minister warned that drought was making it increasingly difficult for farmers to feed animals as pastures dry up.
A Vienna restaurant owner told AFP that very few people were coming to eat during the heat.

The agency said precipitation deficits reached 90 percent at some measuring stations.
The agency said apricots have begun ripening roughly 20 days earlier than the 1961-1991 average.
Austria had already recorded its longest heatwave in June.
