Austria heat deaths hit record 646 in June and July
Austria recorded 646 heat-related deaths in June and July, the country's health agency AGES said Sunday, the highest number it has recorded for those two months.
AGES said the total exceeded the previous high of 570 heat-related deaths in June and July 2024. The agency calculates the figures using a statistical model that analyses excess mortality.
Austria has been affected by heatwaves and drought this summer. A temperature record of 41.2C was set at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in eastern Austria in early August, after a previous high of 41C was recorded in Vienna a day earlier.
Uncertainty notes
The heat-death figures are modelled estimates based on excess mortality, not individually confirmed causes of death.
