Israel aid worker probe closure condemned by three nations
Britain, Canada and Australia on Friday condemned Israel's decision to close an investigation into the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers killed in Gaza in 2024, calling the move “shameful”.
The World Central Kitchen employees — three Britons, a dual US-Canadian national, a Pole, an Australian and a Palestinian — died in a drone strike on their vehicle convoy after overseeing the unloading of a food aid shipment. Israel's military called the incident a “tragic mistake”.
“In the more than two years since, we have been pressing for Israel to swiftly and thoroughly consider the case and hold those responsible to account,” the three nations said in a joint statement.
“The announcement by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) on 19 August 2026 that it would not pursue criminal investigations into this strike, without further explanation, is shameful,” they said.
The incident in April 2024 prompted international anger and renewed calls to protect aid workers in Gaza. The three governments said announcing the decision on World Humanitarian Day, when humanitarian workers were being honoured, was “particularly egregious”.
The Israeli military acknowledged a series of errors at various levels of command, but a preliminary investigation concluded Wednesday that there was no “reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct”.
Israel's foreign ministry posted on X on Friday that Israel extended condolences to the families of the seven aid workers. It said the decision not to launch a criminal probe was made by Israel's independent military prosecution authorities on “strict professional and legal considerations”.
“We remain committed to the safety of humanitarian personnel, compliance with international humanitarian law and preventing such tragedies from recurring,” the ministry added.
World Central Kitchen condemned the decision as “inconsistent with the full truth and deeply offensive” and demanded an independent commission to investigate the airstrikes, saying the Israeli military could not credibly investigate its own conduct.
Australia had expressed outrage at the closure of the investigation on Thursday and summoned Israel's ambassador.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said she was "outraged" by Israel's decision.
Wong summoned Israel's ambassador Hillel Newman over the decision.
Newman said after the meeting that he expressed "deep sorrow and grief" to Lalzawmi "Zomi" Frankcom's family.
Newman said Israel had no intention to attack or injure the aid workers and said the conclusion of no criminal liability should be respected.

Australia learned of Israel's decision late Wednesday, shortly before it was announced on World Humanitarian Day, according to Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
Wong said the timing was especially insulting to Zomi Frankcom's family, humanitarian workers and Australians.
Frankcom was one of seven World Central Kitchen staff killed in April 2024 when their aid convoy was mistakenly hit by an Israeli air strike.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously said the military killed the volunteers unintentionally.
Wong said Israel's decision fell far short of the accountability Australia expected.
