Trump golf course suspect faces federal gun charge
Federal prosecutors have charged Jeanine John Taele, 38, with possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle after his arrest at President Donald Trump's golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, two days before Trump visited for a Republican fundraiser.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said investigators were still examining Taele's motives and were thankful he was apprehended before the president's visit. Authorities have provided no evidence that Taele was targeting Trump.
According to a criminal complaint, Taele was first noticed Friday at Trump Golf Club walking on the course, wearing an earpiece and taking photos and videos of federal agents' security-planning activity. He was seen again Sunday and arrested.
Deputies found a 16-round magazine with hollow-point ammunition in his pants pocket and a loaded 9mm pistol in his car. Police said a search of his home found an assault-style rifle, a pistol, a bulletproof vest, high-capacity magazines, ammunition, two radios and notebooks containing concerning statements.
Taele initially claimed he was on a State Department security assignment, but a background check showed he was wanted on a theft warrant. He also faces multiple firearms-related charges under California law.
He is due before a federal judge in Los Angeles on Wednesday for a bail decision. Trump's Tuesday evening fundraising dinner at the golf club went ahead without incident.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele of Downey, California.
Trump arrived by helicopter at the golf club Tuesday evening for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner.
Deputies said they recovered hollow-point ammunition from the suspect's pocket and a loaded pistol and additional loaded magazine from the suspect's vehicle.
Investigators later searched Taele's home and reported finding weapons, a bulletproof vest, ammunition, radios and notebooks with concerning statements.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will decide whether to file charges after investigators presented the case Tuesday morning.

The sheriff's office identified the arrested man as a 38-year-old from Downey, California.
Police said plainclothes federal agents saw him walking through the golf course grounds taking photographs and videos.
Police said he appeared to monitor security-planning activities.
