Anita Among release ordered, Uganda army chief says

Uganda's army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba said President Yoweri Museveni had ordered the release of former parliament speaker Anita Among from house arrest and that she would not be prosecuted.

Kainerugaba wrote on X on Tuesday that Museveni had instructed him to release Among, referring to her by her initials. He said she had “made mistakes” but that Museveni had decided to forgive her.

Among had been confined to her home in Kampala since May after graft allegations. Her offices were searched and a car collection, including a Rolls-Royce, was confiscated.

An AFP reporter said security personnel remained outside Among's house on Tuesday morning.

Ali Munira, a spokesperson for Uganda's anti-corruption body, told AFP that the body had never said it was investigating Among. An official X post from the organisation dated May 19 said it had begun preliminary investigations, and Munira declined to comment on that post. An official from the organisation, speaking anonymously, told AFP it was no longer pursuing any case against Among.

Among became parliament speaker in March 2022 and had faced corruption allegations for years. Britain and the United States have imposed sanctions on her.
