AI songs to be banned from Australia’s top charts

AI-generated songs will be barred from Australia’s main music charts under new eligibility rules taking effect on August 28, the Australian Recording Industry Association said.

ARIA said music must be “substantially human made” to qualify for its charts. It said tracks that use AI to generate all or the main part of their creative elements will be excluded, while recordings that use generative AI in a supporting role will remain eligible.

The industry body said the rules are intended to protect “the human nature of artistry” as music companies face growing concern over AI-generated tracks.

In July, a cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” reached the top of the charts in Australia and came under scrutiny after it was revealed to have used AI-generated vocals and drums.

ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd said the charts should remain a transparent measure of the music Australians consume, but that rewarding unlicensed AI output would undercut the recorded music the association represents.
