Iran warns region against cooperating with US

Iran's military warned countries in the Middle East on Saturday not to cooperate with Washington, accusing the United States of escalating the region's war after US President Donald Trump repeated threats to hit Iran "very hard".

Ali Abdollahi, head of Iran's military central command, said in a statement read on Iranian state television that "the United States is rapidly moving down the path of escalating tensions in the region".

"Any country serving as defensive shield for criminal and aggressive America will be engulfed by the flames of war," Abdollahi said.

The warning followed a week in which Iran and the United States resumed overnight exchanges of fire after a days-long lull. There were no reported strikes overnight from Friday to Saturday.

Earlier in the latest wave, US Central Command said American forces had carried out a heavy wave of strikes against Iran, hitting dozens of Revolutionary Guard targets including military command centres. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Thursday that three of their members were killed in a US attack in the northwest.

Washington described its earlier strikes as retaliation after Iran targeted American bases in Jordan. Jordan's army said it intercepted five Iranian missiles, while Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted US bases there.

The wider war began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes across the region.
