Five climbers believed to be Bosnian found dead on Mount Elbrus
Five foreign climbers believed to be Bosnian were found dead on Mount Elbrus after worsening weather caused their seven-person group to stray from its route, Russian authorities and state media said.
The local prosecutor’s office said the group was climbing Russia’s highest mountain on July 24. Rapidly worsening weather caused the climbers to lose their route the following evening.
One member of the group descended and alerted authorities, according to the prosecutor’s office. The climber said two members of the group had fallen ill and died at an altitude of 5,100 metres.
Rescuers later found another surviving climber and the bodies of three other members of the group, the prosecutor’s office said.
Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic confirmed reports of the deaths and described them as a major tragedy.
