Flash flood kills 10 at tourist site in Gansu, China, state media says

A flash flood caused by heavy rain killed 10 people and injured 23 at a tourist site in northwest China on Sunday, Chinese state media reported. State broadcaster CCTV said a mountain torrent trapped campers at a scenic area in Weiyuan County, Dingxi City, in Gansu Province.

CCTV identified the location as the Shuangshimen Scenic Area in the mountains of southern Gansu, about 1,200 kilometres southwest of Beijing.

The broadcaster said the injured had been taken to hospital and that rescuers had brought 174 other people to safety.

Shuangshimen is known for stone arches, alpine meadows and mountain streams and is a popular summer camping destination.

Large parts of southern China were also under flood warnings after Typhoon Noul made landfall earlier on Sunday.

Gansu was outside the typhoon’s path, but parts of the province experienced heavy rain and local authorities issued weather alerts.

State broadcaster CCTV said the flood was a mountain torrent triggered by short-term heavy rainfall.

CCTV located the incident at a scenic spot in Weiyuan County, Dingxi City, in Gansu Province.

CCTV said some campers were trapped at the location.
