Sony raises outlook as quarterly profit rises 32%

Sony raised its annual profit forecast on Friday after stronger earnings from its video games business and support from the weak yen.

The Japanese consumer electronics company said it now expects net income of 1.21 trillion yen, or $7.5 billion, for the year to next March, up from its previous projection of 1.16 trillion yen.

Sony, maker of the PlayStation console, projected group revenue of 12.5 trillion yen for the year to March 31, 2027, up from a May forecast of 12.3 trillion yen.

The company said favourable foreign currency effects and tariff refunds by the United States were also supporting results. Between April and June, net profit rose 32.1% to 342.2 billion yen, and sales rose 8.2%.

Sony said it had enough components to meet planned PlayStation 5 production levels during the current fiscal year. It also said an earthquake in Kumamoto in southwestern Japan on Tuesday, which left 35 people dead, affected its local semiconductor production plants but caused no major damage.
