Bullet strikes US consulate in Toronto in second shooting in four months

A bullet struck the facade of the US consulate in Toronto early on Monday in the second shooting at the diplomatic compound in four months, police said. No one was injured.

Toronto Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo said an officer guarding the consulate heard a gunshot at about 4:45 a.m.

Police said a white sedan without licence plates was seen fleeing the scene. Officers pursued the vehicle but quickly abandoned the chase because of the danger caused by its high speed.

The area was cordoned off and shell casings were found.

Police said no suspects had been identified and confirmed that the Toronto Police Service’s counterterrorism unit was involved in the investigation.

The US consulate thanked police for their response.

Police were also investigating two weekend shootings targeting bakeries belonging to a chain owned by a member of the Jewish community.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said active investigations were under way into the bakery shootings and the incident at the US consulate.

On March 10, two men fired multiple shots at the consulate in what police described as a national security incident.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, were arrested in June as part of that investigation.

Police said the men had been recruited to carry out violent acts but provided no further details.
