Scottish police say 15 arrested after rival Glasgow protests

Police in Scotland said 15 people were arrested on July 25 after what officers described as significant disorder linked to rival anti-immigration and anti-racism demonstrations in Glasgow.

Police Scotland said officers responded to incidents connected to planned protest activity. The force said a large group had left the initial site of the clashes and was causing further disorder in the city centre.

Police said arrests were made for assault, possession of offensive weapons and other public order offences.

The anti-immigration group Unite The Clans Scotland had advertised a protest at Glasgow Green from 12 noon local time under slogans including “save our women and children” and “protect our future”. Stand Up To Racism held a counter-demonstration and said it was opposing the far right in Glasgow.

Unverified footage posted on social media was reported to show scuffles between the rival groups near Glasgow city centre. The footage showed police, including mounted officers, intervening, and demonstrators on both sides wearing masks.

The source said Glasgow has seen a series of immigration-related protests in recent years that have sometimes turned violent, similar to a trend in towns and cities in England. Glasgow is currently hosting the Commonwealth Games.
