Paris knife attack suspect moved to psych unit
Paris prosecutors said Tuesday that a man arrested over a knife attack that wounded three women in the French capital has been removed from custody and placed in a police psychiatric unit.
The unidentified man was stopped by an off-duty police officer on Monday in the northwestern 17th arrondissement just after he was seen stabbing women aged 19, 24 and 36 with kitchen knives, authorities said.
The interior ministry said two of the women were seriously wounded but not in critical condition. Witnesses reported that the assailant made incoherent statements at the scene, according to the ministry.
The Paris prosecutor's office said that, after a behavioural examination on Tuesday, the suspect's mental state was deemed incompatible with custody in a cell and that he was receiving psychiatric attention.
Earlier official accounts said the attack happened in the Porte de Clichy area. Geoffroy Boulard, mayor of the 17th district, said one of the women was pregnant. The suspect's identity and motive have not been established in the supplied material.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said two of the three wounded women were seriously wounded and in critical condition.
The mayor of Paris's 17th district, Geoffroy Boulard, said one of the wounded women was pregnant.
A witness said a young man with a suitcase knocked the suspect down and a waiter then held him down with a chair.
Nunez said the suspect had made incoherent statements and warned against premature conclusions about motive.
