OpenAI says it has more than 1 billion active users
OpenAI said Friday that its artificial intelligence models now reach more than 1 billion active users and more than 2 million businesses, less than four years after the launch of ChatGPT.
The company said the figure covers all of its AI interfaces, mainly ChatGPT, but also Codex, its programming-focused model, and ChatGPT Work, a platform that lets users access external applications.
OpenAI said people are using the technology more deeply as they gain confidence in it.
Several US media outlets reported that the San Francisco-based company had expected to reach the milestone earlier this year, after reaching 900 million weekly active users in late February, but faced stronger competition.
OpenAI was founded in 2015 and launched ChatGPT in November 2022. The company made business customers a priority in late 2025.
In early July, OpenAI released three versions of GPT-5.6, including a low-cost version called Luna. On Thursday, it cut Luna’s price by 80 percent.
