Ghana to return 1,000 more nationals from South Africa after anti-migrant violence

Ghana said 1,000 more of its nationals would be flown home from South Africa on Sunday and Monday following violent protests against migrants.

The Ghanaian foreign ministry said special flights would begin arriving during the two days, describing them as the final phase of the government’s evacuation operation.

Ghana has already brought 926 people back from South Africa.

President John Mahama called on the African Union to discuss what he described as xenophobic attacks in South Africa. He also accused the South African government of failing to do enough to stop the violence.

More than 160,000 foreign nationals, mainly from other African countries, have left South Africa since May, according to figures reported by several governments.
