Tehran’s Hotel Esteghlal evacuated after nearby fire; no injuries reported
Guests were evacuated from Tehran’s five-star Hotel Esteghlal on Monday after a fire broke out in a nearby storage area, Iranian state media reported.
Tehran fire department spokesman Jalal Maleki said no injuries had been reported and that firefighters had brought the blaze under control.
AFP journalists saw black and white smoke around the hotel tower and flames coming from a nearby building.
State news agency IRNA quoted Maleki as saying the fire began in a storage area used by the hotel for food supplies, bedding and other flammable materials.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known and would be investigated, Maleki said.
State television footage showed fire engines at the scene while onlookers watched the emergency response.
Hotel Esteghlal, formerly known as the Royal Hilton, was built in the 1960s, according to IRNA.
